Kate currently works as a freelance consultant, specialising in the evaluation of learning in museums and other informal learning centres. Projects have recently included evaluating audience development projects for Birmingham Museums, and the National Archives who are co-ordinating an archives project called Moving Here. Front End evaluation for exhibitions has been undertaken for the Natural history Museum. Advice and support for education development work has recently been provided for Rugby Art Gallery and Museum and Coventry Museums in a partnership project. Academic research has focused on assessing children’s informal learning and on evaluation methodology. A newly published article has been published in The Responsive Museum, edited by Lang, Reeve and Woollard, entitled “Understanding Museum Evaluation”

Kate trained as a geologist, initially working as a trainee curator at Leicestershire Museums, Arts and Records Service. She then worked as an education officer at Leicester and initiated a new education service for the Heritage Service (museum and archives) at the London Borough of Hillingdon. Her research for a master’s degree was on the use of the Rutland Dinosaur gallery (Leicester Museum and Art Gallery as it was known then) and its use by schools.

Kate became a freelance consultant specialising in evaluation at the beginning of 2000. Kate is also available to provide advice for life-long learning services requiring policy development, audit and training. She is just completing her fma and works as an associate tutor for the University of Leicester
